Art Process

2min

Time-lapse creation of a large oil painting in the studio from a gouache study. "Silver Harmony" oil 40x72"

Christine created this painting to not only work larger, but also for the personal challenge of trying to do more with grays and have a harmonious feeling. A typical difficult spot for Christine was mid-way though, when the underpainting was finished as this had a great feel with the flowing paint in sepia (mix of Cobra Transparent Oxide and Cobalt Blue), however pushing ahead with the main idea and mixing color from the study in the end was a better result. This is a good way to see how the work can evolve to the final version and not stop too early on.

In only 2 minutes this gives a great overview of the artistic process... 1 working out an idea ...2 making a study ...3 going bigger ...4 underpainting ...5 top layer painting ...6 adjustments/details. It's important for all levels of artists to know how a painting can be created. This can seem daunting at times, but should serve as a point of inspiration instead. Do you want to work larger? Do you want to make better studies and maybe work smaller? Do you want to work in another media? Everyone will have a different artistic journey but it can start by looking at how a large painting such as this gets created to target specific learning goals.

Try pushing a main idea in your work further. This can be with a sketch, clarity of intent, or working larger.
