Define your points of interest in nature (subject, mood, color, shape, etc).

Create some simple studies of shapes. Try some value or color bands. Try dot swatches of equal value but different colors. (Keep these separate at first). You can check out how you did by using a phone photo to take a greyscale photo.  Next try to merge the shapes and color dots together in a small painting.
