Fundamentals

Stay focused on location and identify the primary source of inspiration in a scene. Get playful with color dots and stripe-bands in watercolor.

14min

Filmed on location in Maine, these 3 studies show how minimum time can give maximum results with playtime in watercolor. No expectation, just colorful fun. Use as warm-up studies pre-plein air session, or to take back into the studio to make a future painting. During the video I share how I maintain focus with shifting light, distraction of noise, people, cats and bugs.

Work on studies of your own in the yard or at a local park. Try memory studies. Try on-site location studies. Try 2 planes first (near/far) and then 3, then 4. Challenge yourself. Don't worry about shape or composition... this is a time to play with color and settle in to the scene.
