Art Process

Process to create a large painting of a pastoral scene while considering the role of 'medium' value and managing flat-looking (boring) artwork.

14min

This 2-part video describes how I work within the medium value range and strategize my moves towards a final painting. The artwork goes through many transformations and I describe the design, composition, value, and mood intentions for the painting as I move to the finish.

Part 1 - define flat art, what is good or bad about the art, composition ideas, digital sketching to improve the artwork mid-process.

Part 2 - slow but impactful moves towards the finish (this took about 2 months to create) hopefully it's close to being done!

Decide on which major or minor moves you want to make on your own painting. Ask yourself important questions as you progress... What is the mood? What is the strategy? What is comfortable to do versus hard work and a challenge? Does the process feel scary or fun?

By understanding your own preferences and strengths (or weakness) you will become a better painter. The process might seem very tedious and long in the studio, but this will pay off with quicker decisions in the field... and over time quicker decisions in the studio.
