Art Process

I made a copy of J. Sorolla's art to understand his process... I was really shocked at how much learned!

I share my process of strategy as I create a master art copy of Joaquin Sorolla's "Court and Fountain at the Alcazar of Seville" painting. Sorolla's art was 25 x 38" and mine is 24x36". I learned so much about intent, paint handling, composition, and how to make a concept my own.

Try a master copy!

Beginners can try sketches in black and white or grayscale. Also you can try tracing paintings you like to find the 5 "big shapes" usually present in most great artworks. Tracing things is frowned upon in the art learning world, but for students are starting out this can be a tool to get a grip on starting understand basic shapes. Try working small to start.

Intermediate and advanced artists can try study-to-studio process, it's best to pair master works to a personal experience you have had (beach, forest, garden, etc). See Art Vision series of videos for how to go beyond the reference and for technical info on repainting. Also Digital U series for Perspective and Ipad editing or sketching tools.
