Art Process

How to use multiple paintings to grow as an artist, why a series works to solve problems and create art faster.

8min

I share my process of strategy as I create a second large painting of a marsh scene. This is similar (but different) from the prior painting that was the same size (40x72"). See assignment tab to discover how you can start working in a series. Beginner, Intermediate and advanced strategies.

Try a series!

Beginners can try small paintings featuring one element (light, water, grasses, etc). Explore the Library-Fundamentals-Mini series videos for more ideas. Also try Humble studies in Fundamentals.

Intermediate artists can try study-to-studio process, several plein air studies of the same location, and then working the artwork bigger. Art Process or any follow-along lesson in the program can give you ideas!

Advanced artists can use a series to be critical of thier work. Create artwork. Now review which is your favorite and why? What would you change? Is there a painting that is not getting finished? Which one was easy and which one was hard to do? Do you know why or is it a mystery? Some 'problem' art is a mystery to me with my current body of work, just keep reviewing the process. When I look at problem art from the past I see easily what was wrong).
