Live Demos

Recorded Live, Christine shows: design tips, color mixes, and how to create an oil on a 9x12" panel.

1hr 10min

SUPPLIES: I paint in Oil on a 9x12 panel (I use a Sourcetek oil primed linen panel in the demo), vertical, (you can pre-draw/tone from reference image, use the grid if this helps). Basic oil palette (see supply list). Watercolor artists can create this from light to dark with multiple washes, or try some wet-in-wet especially for the background. Shadows will be easy in watercolor... create the artwork as if there is no sun or cast shadow, then when dry add the cast shadow. Watercolor examples of Europe buildings and background (plus location photo) are shown at marker 1:27 and 3:24.

I show a grid-copy example here (fairly rare for me to do this)!. I stay fairly true to the photo example but do change the road direction and simplify the background.

Flow of class: QA from Prep video, demo (drawing, block in, some details, edges and manipulation of paint), Critique my art and process, QA from students, Showcase of student paint along art.

A key part of this is making the trees dark and getting the correct value and color for the far hill mass. The sky cannot be to light either. If these darker values are in place the building and road will be nice and bright! Some students had trouble with the shadows especially as they crossed the road, so check to make the right colors and value are painted.
