Create sketches with me in this video, or watch and then do your own. It's great to try with your own photos (vacation pics are terrific) because there are strong memories attached. This will make the project personal and interesting to do. Also, for the final painting the viewer will feel your passion of your subject. This love of subject can actually clarify much of your art's 'big idea' and foster how the design progresses.
SKETCHING MINDSET: Usually my design happens with paint quickly on the panel and I sculpt / scrape / restate as needed to get results. This can lead to re-painting, or failed paintings. It can be an expensive mistake due to time spent and paint wasted on layers hoping that 'something' will fix the bad art. Pre-planning with studies can solve many problems before painting and it's a great tried-and-true method. The truth is one method does not fit all artists, so a better way to describe sketching is that it's a powerful tool to know about. Sketches often feel like a chore before I get to the good part which is painting. Notice in the video how I start a bit slow and second guess things (erase, or start over) and then later the ideas and sketches seem to flow better. This is the process! Clumsy to start and then get going. Give it a try!
