Live Demos

Recorded on Zoom. Strategy and self-awareness of 'style' in sketching and what to capture on location. 2 demos (pencil and watercolor), students share work done in class.

50min

Intro covers the sketching mindset, and self awareness. I define 'style' in sketching and a simple text graphic prompts students to self-reflect.

I then define what sketching is. I show examples of a stream for sketches and then move to a Charleston scene at twilight. I cover what to see, how to focus and strategize priorities on location. We 'go back in time' as if I was sketching and prepping to create my oil demo. You can see the Charleston impression "Twilight Blush" artwork (full demo) in Urban & City collection.

2 demos (pencil and watercolor rough sketches, and then a longer demo in watercolor)

This is a 'find how YOU sketch class' but also you can use this as a paint a long lesson. As you develop ideas to paint you must make it personal. Here in class we get real about making 'bad' sketches and re-frame this to why they are good! You are trying out ideas. There is no good or bad, just culling and sorting of ideas. Playtime with paint.

If you are a beginner there are valuable ideas presented in class. This lesson and exercises presented will guide you into finding your own things to paint and your own designs. I think sketching and the purpose of sketching is only figured out after painting for a long time. In the beginning you want to try ideas, and paint something 'real' looking. Something good. It is only later that you can get comfortable sifting through ideas and finding and developing 'good' ideas. Use this video as a shortcut to start finding your own likes and dislikes. Now you are sketching!
